District 12 holds a special place in Singapore’s urban history. Toa Payoh (meaning "big swamp" in Hokkien) was the second satellite town built by the HDB and served as a prototype for modern residential planning. Balestier is named after Joseph Balestier, the first US Consul, and is famous for its Art Deco shophouses and historic landmarks like the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall.
